If you own a domain you need a place to put the site so that when people go to see it or send email to it everything works. This is what we do.

Features - We offer a certain amount of space for you to put your website. That could be any where from 100 Megabytes on up. There are also other things that come with your website:

Throughput - This is a measure of how much is being uploaded and downloaded from your site, total, per month. Usually this will not be a problem for new sites since not many people know about them yet, but if you have a busy site and you want to transfer it to us you should find out from your current host how much throughput (bandwidth) you are using now. Once you have an account with us you can see how much you have used so far on your Control Panel (see CPanel).

CPanel - To make it easier for you to make your site work we have installed CPanel software. This is the best one we've found so far. You get to this web page by going to www.yourdomain.com/cpanel or www.yourwebsite.com:2082 with your web browser. It will prompt you for the username and password you received in your welcome email. Once your in it's pretty easy to use from there, but if you are still having difficulties click on the link at the bottom left that says DocumentationClick to View and it will open a page with help files.

eMail - You can manage your eMail from your CPanel (see CPanel). To access your Web Mail you can go to www.yourdomain.com/webmail or www.yourdomain.com:2095. This will then prompt you for your username, which is your full eMail address (you@yourdomain.com), and your password, which you setup in CPanel under mail.

If you haven't setup any mail accounts or you will only have one email your username is the same as your CPanel username and the password is also the same as your CPanel password.

POP3 - If you want to use an eMail client (Outlook, OE, Eudora, etc.) to check your eMail you will need this information: Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com; Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com; Username: youremail@yourdomain.com or your CPanel username; Password: The one you setup in CPanel or your CPanel password.

Catchall - If you want to use an eMail client (Outlook, OE, Eudora, etc.) to check your eMail you will need this information: Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com; Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com; Username: youremail@yourdomain.com or your CPanel username; Password: The one you setup in CPanel or your CPanel password.

Scripts - What are scripts? They are premade pieces of websites that you can add on to your own. For example we offer Image Magick, which is an image/gallery management script (in PHP). You can install this on your domain (preferably in a subfolder) and put a link to it on your page. When people click on the link they will see the gallery, which is already made, and the only thing you need to do is upload the pictures. Well, it's a little more complicated than that, but Image Magick has a great tutorial on how to use it. The best part is it's free. You can see a list of our scripts in CPanel.

FTP - This is how you upload your site. You can use many methods to do this. You can download an FTP client program, use the web based FTP from your CPanel (is there anything it doesn't do?), or you can use Internet Explorer. If you haven't done this before we suggest starting with Internet Explorer. You would type ftp://www.yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.com into the browser to open the FTP. It will then open a warning telling you about some of the rules and settings of the server. Click OK to close that. Then from the File menu at the top click on Login As… and type in your username and password you setup in CPanel or your CPanel username & password if you have not. Then you will see a list of folders on your website. People can only see the files in the public_htm folder so put your website there. You can do this either by using Copy & Paste or Drag & Drop with your mouse.

FrontPage - You need to make sure that FrontPage extensions are installed on your site. You can find this out from your CPanel by clicking on the FrontPage Extensions link. To use them you need to have your ftp info (see FTP) use ftp.yourdomain.com to upload to. If you need help refer to the help provided by Microsoft.

DNS (Move your site to us) - This is the most difficult part for most people to understand about Web Hosting. We'll break it down real simple so even we can understand it. We need to explain a few things first:

Everything on the Internet has an IP address. It's how the computers know where things are. Web Pages have IPs, your computer when it connects to the Internet has an IP, and everything on the Internet has an IP.

When your computer logs onto the Internet it connects to a DNS server. When you type a web page into your browser, www.telavir.com for example, your computer asks the DNS server where this site is and the DNS server usually responds with an IP address saying it's there and then your computer asks whatever is at that IP address for the website called www.telavir.com. That being said now we can get to how your site works.

When you register your domain your Domain Registrar will assign 2 DNS servers (possibly more) to your domain. These servers are where your site is at until you change them by making a request to your registrar or login to your account with them and make the change yourself. So when you type your domain into your browser your computer will be sent to these 2 DNS servers to find your domain.

Your DNS - For you to host your site with us you need to contact your registrar (or login to your account there) and change your DNS servers to ns1.telavir.com & ns2.telavir.com. After you make this change it can take up to 72 hours (possibly more) for the rest of the DNS servers to notice the change. Also if you've been to your site before your computer might still "remember" the old location of your site until you clear out your browser's history. So if you don't see our default page right away you will have a good idea why. Once you can see the default page you can upload your site (see FTP).

Client Area - If you have an account with us we sent you information on how to access the client area. To get there click on the Login link on the main page and you'll be brought to the Login Page. Once you've logged in you can view your past billing, current invoices, your billing information, and create trouble tickets.

Domain Registration - You can register domains by going to our domain registration website. Click on the domain registration link at the bottom of all our pages.

Transfers - You can transfer your domain to our registration service for a really great price and it adds 1 year to your current registration. Try us. Totransfer a .com, .net, or .info domain name you will need to make a request to our registration service to transfer your domain. We will then send you a confirmation eMail to make sure you want to transfer the domain to us. Then we send a request to your registrar to transfer your domain to us. Your registrar will send you a confirmation eMail to make sure you want to transfer the domain away from them. Once this is answered your domain should transfer to us within the next 72 hours.

Transferring .org & .biz domains are almost the same as above except you need to obtain a transfer code from your current registrar to enter into our transfer form. This code has also been called a transfer secret, secret code, passcode, and anything else registrars can do to make it confusing enough so you won't transfer your domains to someone else.

TLDs - Remember DNS servers (see DNS)? What if they don't know where www.telavir.com is (it is a BIG internet)? Well, then it looks at the domain name to find out what the root of it is. Let's break a domain name down shall we?

Subdomain | Domain | Root or TLD
www . yourdomain . com

So your DNS server would go to ask the Root Server for the .com root where is www.telavir.com? And it would answer because it knows where all the .com domains are. When you register a domain you have a lot of options now check them out: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, & .name are all available to anyone. Others generic Top Level Domains (TLD) include .aero, .coop, .museum, & .pro and they have some restrictions placed on them.

2 letter TLDs (.tv, .ws, .cc, etc.) are assigned to countries and they have the right to resell them to whomever they want. Some examples are United States (.us), Canada (.ca), Tuvalu (.tv), Western Samoa (.ws), Cocos Islands (.cc), and even England (.uk). For a complete list click here.

Resellers - We allow other people to resell some of our services. You can resell our shared web hosting, our domain registration, and even work with us on web design. You will have to contact us by eMail to setup an account.

Reseller Features - You will be able to offer your customers all of the features we offer our customers plus you can add branding so you have your face on the merchandise and not ours.

WHM - We offer the Web Hosting Manager that will help you manage your hosting service.

WHMA - You can also purchase the WHMA billing system to handle all of your payment transactions, website provisioning, trouble tickets, and accounting.

Affiliates - We have an affiliate program where you can refer people to our services and you will receive a commission for them. - Check it out.

Managed Servers - Want to be your own Web Host? Or would you just like a server on the Internet to play with? We can help, just drop us aneMail telling us what you're looking for and we'll set it all up.

Support - We suggest you fill out a trouble ticket from the Client Area (see Client Area). If you can't get access to the Client area, fill out the contact form on the contact page.

Other Interesting Items:

You can install any of our free scripts from your Control Panel.

If you use a Catchall eMail address, give other people their domain at your domain (i.e. telavir@yourdomain.com). If you start getting spam sent to that address you can shut it down by forwarding it somewhere else.

There are built in spam blockers. You can activate them in CPanel.

If you sign up with a second domain don't forget to click on the existing customer link so it is added to your existing account.

Make sure all file names on your site are all upper or all lower case. Case does matter and it saves time troubleshooting in the future.

Your hosting account and your domain registration account are not linked together. A website is made up of 3 things:

Domain

Design

Hosting

Domain

A domain is like and address. It lets people know where you are. There are two different kinds of domains: one you own and the other you don't.

Domains YOU Own

You can register a domain if it is not already taken by someone else. They're made up of two main parts: the name and the top level domain (TLD). For example Telavir.com is made up of the telavir name and the .com TLD. The telavir part is the part that needs to be unique. You cannot register telavir because we already own it, but you can register your domain with a .com TLD. There are many different TLDs and the most common are .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz & .info. Try to get a .com if you can.

Your domain name should be easy for people to remember. For example if smithflowers.com is taken someone might suggest you register smith-flowers.com. It would be better to get theflowersmith.com because it's easier to remember and people might forget the hyphen.

You can search for and register a domain at Telavir.biz.

Domains You Don't Own

These are usually free domains. Blogspot is a good example. They will give you yourblog.blogspot.com. There are three parts here: yourblog is a subdomain that they own, blogspot is their domain and .com is the TLD. Facebook is also a good example. They will give you facebook.com/yourpage . There are three parts here as well: facebook is the domain they own, .com is the TLD and /yourpage is a subfolder of their site that they own.

It is ok to make sites on domains you don't own, but your main business page should always be at a domain you own. It's more professional that way.

Design

Now that you have a domain you need to design a website. You can hire someone to do it or you can do it yourself. It involves creating files that hold the information about your site. Some webhosting companies have their own website design software built in to their hosting offerings. Either way you will end up with a bunch of files that are your website.

Hosting

Now that you have the files for your website you need a place to put them. There are companies that have computers connected to the internet all the time just for this purpose. They are called hosting companies. Telavir Internet is one of these. They also offer other cool things related to owning a domain like email@yourdomain.com, subdomains.yourdomain.com and built in webdesign programs to help you build your site.

Once you have a hosting company you need to point your domain to it. Usually if you host with the same company that you registered your domain with, you can skip this step.

The prices for this can vary greatly from $9.99 to $20.00 per year for domain registration. WebHosting can go from $3 to $30 per month for hosting. The sky is the limit for WebDesign. To get started we suggest Telavir Internet where you pay $9.99/year for domain registration and $27/year for WebHosting.

Webhosting Nightmare

The world of the Internet is a complex and magical place full of information, people and opportunity. So moving your business to the Internet seems like a good idea. That's what one of my friends thought when he had the idea to move his business there.

He had a business that hadn't really been pushed online and thought it might take off. He found a friend of a friend that was a wiz at web development. He paid him well to do all the work setting up the site and further supplemented the pay with commission from the website sales. Gross sales peaked at $500,000/month. One day my friend came in to the office and no orders were coming in. The customer service reps could not access the site. It was up and running. He called the developer and got no answer. Business ground to a halt.

The developer had originally registered the domain for my friend. He also picked the webhosting, designed the site and had the site backed up at his home. He had decided he wanted more than my friend was offering and took the site to a competitor. They liked it, agreed to his terms and he re-routed all the sales emails to them. He also gave access to the customer service for the back end.

There was nothing my friend could do. The domain was not in his name. He didn't pay directly for the hosting. He didn't have a backup of the site at his facility. Even after a long legal battle he did not recover his site or money lost.

The lesson here is to make sure domain names are owned by the business or it's owner, hosting should be chosen and initiated by the business and a backup of the website should be downloaded to the business.

Now my friend hosts his websites with Telavir Internet. Not only does he own his domain names and control his hosting, if a malicious web designer tries to take the domain Telavir can 'steal' it back. Telavir is the domain registrar and the host. So if the same situation that happened to my friend were to happen again. Telavir can move the domain back to the Telavir servers, they can restore the backup of the site and change all the passwords so the developer is stuck.

Web Hosting 21

Yet another site to promote the primary one. Add to it a domain at $9.99/year and you've got a great deal. When we started in 2000 the big players of the time were offering a domain for that price. Now we offer a domain and hosting for the same price.

What does that include? It includes 250mb of space, 3.5gb of bandwidth (monthly throughput), FTP, unlimited email accounts, 1 email list, 2 MySQL databases, unlimited subdomains and free scripts ready to be installed through your control panel.

This is perfect for anyone wanting to get a website up. Although they can probably expect better support and response times than previous years.

What's new?

We will be adding design, SEO consulting and Social Media services to our repertoire. In the past our employees have offered some design to our customers and our template site outsources to other designers. Now we will have the option to do custom design directly from Telavir.
